Hello Readers!?

So everyone is reading right? tee hee

Boss lady VK says we should plan on meeting next Monday December 14th @ 6PMish upstairs Gingerman, upstairs to discuss our current book - The Book Thief

If we are really meeting, I am in trouble! Time to read, read, read. Meeting request? Is Monday on?

Now taking next book recommendations! Email VK with your suggestions.

So far we have something By Ayn Rand (We The Living, The Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged), submitted by Carly. Another poll to come if there are more choices.

I have just read a few pages long, long ago. It was kinda weird. This is supposed to be a book for teens - come on! I can read this one... haha Nando has not attempted to read. We only bought one copy and use it as a coaster by the bed.

Will there be prizes?

Meeting #3 - I win!

Monday night was our third meeting and we discussed The Road. The meeting had to be moved to The Gingerman last-minute due to yucky weather.

We had some beers and good conversation. The best part was I read the whole book and WON A PRIZE! Tracy won some chocolate coins. My prize was a coke in a bottle for knowing what the father found for the boy. Tracy's question was to name the ship they found. Way to go Richard on themed prizes! Carly got some gingersnaps for knowing where they found the flares (not so themed, but delicious).

Some things we talked about: Would we ever eat people - no!, Was there a theme about God or no God - we think this was not the intention, Is the book male chauvinistic - we think no, but is male-centered. Why no names, no chapters, no punctuation - adds to get into the desperation -- going on and on, no attachments, nothing left, etc.

Will we see the movie? Not sure I want to see some of that stuff, but curious and good cast. Maybe a group field trip to come...
Meadows lost his book and didn't read at all. He should be catching up now since we lent ours to him.

Please send requests for our next book to valerie.klimko@gmail.com Her and TP will narrow down list and I will post the top choices for voting.

Until then, read some comics.

Done!

Less than 24 hours until the meeting and I just finished the book. So, I'll admit, I just started reading it on Friday, but I did it - read the whole thing. Not sure how I feel about it yet - we'll discuss tomorrow! And I don't think I want to see the movie...

Meeting #2

Monday night was Meeting #2 at The Quarter Bar. We had final discussions of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and introduced our new book, The Road.

Some of us did not finish the book (no, not me... te hee!). We went over the discussion questions in the back and our wonderful President Richard gave out sake prizes (I did not win a prize).

Some over-achievers have even already read The Road!! What?! It will be a boring few weeks for them...

I was a bit disappointed in our bar tender and the fact that they ran out of PBR ($1 night) at around 8pm. The 1/2 price pizza was pretty good and we over-indulged and got loaded cheese fries too...mmm food coma.

Our next meeting will be some time after Labor Day to discuss The Road. Be on the look our for info to come.

Happy Reading.

Our Next Book

Our officers (and some votes from our poll) have spoken -- The Road wins. Get your copy today! Oprah's Book Club read it in 2007, so it must be good enough for us. There is also a movie. Tracy says no cheating, but maybe our last meeting could be watching it (after we've read the book of course).

Per VK - Critics have deemed it "heartbreaking," "haunting," and "emotionally shattering." On April 16, 2007, the novel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. (thank u wiki.)

And Holly C. - OMG - I have already read that one and it can be summed up in one word: DEPRESSING. I needed some Prozac and good chick lit after finishing it.
Adam should love it.

Those of us who have not read it, let's form our own opinions and share over a cold beer!

BTW - Our Zombie book also made Oprah's list... we may need to re-think our Phonic Phailure name and just join Oprah... hmm...

Finish reading Zombies, get your new book and we'll see you August 10 at The Quarter Bar - 6:30 pm. - 1/2 priced Pizza & $1 PBR (full menu here) ... mmm... I can hardly wait for pizza and beer (and books?)!

Still Reading

Yes, I am still reading (kinda). I have picked up my book once or twice since we met and made little progress. I'll get there - still have a couple weeks. You people who are done want something new. Please see below entries for our poll. If you have more suggestions, it's not too late to submit: lizangonzalez@gmail.com Happy reading/voting!

Meeting #1

Our first meeting was a success mostly because I was not the most behind in reading. I had read 58 pages. Lauren read about 40, Fernando read 19 and a few people had not read at all. Yes-I win!

On the over-achiever side, our fearless President, Richard got half way through, Tracy is almost there and VK, Meadows and Kate finished the whole book!

Barcadia was delicious. $2 PBR were kind of disappointment (thought they were $1) and slow service as usual. Discussion was around whether or not Mrs. Bennet has any redeeming qualities and if the zombies represent the author's views toward marriage (an endless curse that sucks the life out of you).

We began conversations of what to read next. I'll be taking suggestions to lizanmike@gmail.com and posting a poll soon. Stay tuned.

We ended the meeting with Galaga and Ms. Pac Man. Next meeting is TBD sometime after August 1. Happy reading if you are not already done and to the rest of you - don't spoil it!

Reading is PHUN!

I have now read 5 short chapters of both the original Pride and Prejudice and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Definitely prefer the funny zombie book. The two are way more similar than I expected. I have a lot more reading to do before next Monday... How does this even work? Whatever. I'll just sit back and have a dollar PBR while everyone else discusses.

Some of my favorite comparisons:
Original: It is a truth universally acknowledged that a man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.
Zombie: It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains.

Original: NA
Zombie: "They shall be as deadly as they are fetching" - Mrs. Bennet about her daughters (this line was added between two original paragraphs)

Original: "That is very true," replied Elizabeth, "and I could easily forgive his pride, if he had not mortified mine."
Zombie: "That is very true," replied Elizabeth, "and I could easily forgive his pride, if he had not mortified mine. I dare say I would've cut his throat had not the unmentionables prevented me from doing so."

My Book Has Arrived!

A very nice young man in brown shorts delivered my book to me today. The original Pride and Prejudice is still on its way -- No, I never had to read it in high school or college and even if I did, I wouldn't have. So the plan is to read a chapter of the old and then a chapter of the zombies. I'll share both books with my hubby, Fernando. He gets nights and I gets days. I flipped though the book and it actually does have several illustrations. Type size looks good. Let's just hope I don't need my dictionary! Almost reading time...

Entry One

First Book: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Assignment is to read by: August 1st
Discussion & drinks: Monday June 29th, 7PM @ Barcadia

This is my first big girl book club. I really don't like to read so this should be interesting. I am currently unemployed so time is no longer an excuse. I'm optimistic, but my first instinct is to ask "where are all the pictures?" I guess I need to go buy this book.
